Cyclone the storm is projected to become a rare highest-level cyclone as it turns in the direction of Jamaica, bringing life-threatening rapid inundation and mudslides.

The cyclone, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean region and is expected to make landfall by midweek, according to weather experts.

Alerts of electricity outages and structural damage have been issued as this storm brings up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been advised.

Melissa is the 13th named cyclone in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Category Five Storm Danger

A category five cyclone is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

While this storm is expected to diminish in strength to a category four cyclone before making landfall on Jamaica, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "at least that intensity" when it strikes the country.

Urgent Safety Steps

With tropical storm-strength gusts and precipitation already expected long before it moves across Jamaica's central region - including potentially the national capital - warnings indicate that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"A multi-day period of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and numerous mudslides," advised meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated: "I realize that there are countless citizens who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the optimal approach to handle anxiety and any nervousness and anxiety is to be prepared."

Locals are being advised to secure their homes with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to stock up on essentials.

Alerts are also in effect for parts of Haiti encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is projected to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Mudslides currently triggered by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

This weather system is projected to pass over Cuba by the middle of the week before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic Ocean.

By the moment it makes contact with Cuba, it is anticipated to have reduced to a category three hurricane.
